Subject: Re: Atwater Hollow

Hi Judy – Daniel and Emeline Vickery Atwater were the first ones to live in Atwater Hollow off of Tinley Road.

I have researched maps and deeds of Southern Rensselaer County and have found that Daniel Augustus Atwater and Caroline/Emeline Vickery Atwater must have first lived in Denault Corners/Alps area of Nassau. The earliest map I have seen is a Rensselaer County Map of 1854 Surveys by A.E. Rogerson C. E. which is located at the Rensselaer County Historical Society in Troy. On this map it shows a home at Denault Corners where J. Manning resides. I think possibly Daniel A and Emeline may have lived here or close by when they first married. Their first child was Eunice Elinor Atwater 1842 – 1842 and she is buried in the Denault Corners Cemetery down the highway (Route 43) from where J. Manning resided. I also think Daniel and Ruth lived here as well as Joseph Manning was their son-in-law. (Joseph married Sally/Sarah Atwater, daughter of Daniel and Ruth, sister to Tuttle Atwater.

Copies of the first part of the deed from Leonards to Daniel Atwater is attached. I was able to get this from Ancestry from the Leonard family.

The property Daniel A and Emeline Atwater first purchased was 103 acres I believe located in Atwater Hollow off Tinley Road in Stephentown for $1000. of which $500 was on the mortgage. The deed is dated April 1, 1847 and purchased from the estate of Justus Leonard who was James Leonard’s father. On the deed it states that Daniel A Atwater was from Nassau and most of the Leonards listed were from Greene County. Now the interesting part is that on the 1850 Federal Census for Stephentown, it shows Daniel, 30 and Caroline Atwater, 31 with John Clark, 16, Mary E.,Atwater, 5 and William H. Atwater, 3. Daniel is listed as a farmer and the value of the property is $1000. On the same census page are the Tinley’s and right next door to Daniel and Caroline Atwater are Silas Leonard, 22 and Julia, 21 his wife. Julia is actually, Francis Julia Manning, daughter of Joseph and Sally Atwater Manning. She was born in Nassau in 1829 – guessing the same house Joseph and Sally are living in on the 1854 Map showing the Alps/ Denault Corners area of Nassau.

On the 1876 Stephentown map I have and tried to photo copy the portion to attach, shows the Daniel and Emeline Atwater Hollow farm now being resided by C. McDade. I have a copy of this deed where The Atwaters sold the property to Charles McDade 1872. I am attaching my transcribed copy. Also, on this map, it shows where Daniel A. Atwater is now living closer to School No. 9. If you can make it out, I am guessing this is Mary’s Camp Road. There is also a store showing just below on what is now Garfield Road.

The first evidence I have of our Atwater branch living in Rensselaer County is the 1800 Federal Census for Schodack. It shows the senior Daniel living here. Census records show: 3 males under 10 (guessing this is Tuttle as he was born in Rensselaer County according to the 1865 Census; Michael, b. 1799 and Daniel, b. 1795) 1 male 26 – 44 (Daniel, b.1766) 1 female 10 -15 (not sure who this would be unless census taker marked the wrong column as Sarah would have been a female under 5) and 1 female 26 – 44 (guessing wife Ruth).

I can go on and on, but I just want to get this out there to you all.

I just want to say, Wow! What great stories you all have! And great memories and fun! Thank you so much for sharing! I would love any old photos you might have and willing to share. I would love to share with my kids and grandkids. My grandsons Travis Riccardi and Cody Atwater are both interested in family history, as is Chad, so I would like to keep collecting as much as I can for them.

Love ya’ll, Micky

Atwater Hollow

so we know Atwater hollow was up Knoblock Road, behind Knoblocks (assuming that house is the last one on the road) toward Tinley Road.

So, now we know or believe that Marys camp was part of the original Atwater Hollow land, and it is 1/2 mile before knoblock road.

Connie also seems to think that there was a sawmill up there.

We also know the camp was burned down.

I found a picture of Marys Camp

I found a picture of The Old Farm at Atwater Hollow, and also a picture of family members having a picnic at the farm.

Now, does anyone know how the Atwaters came to Atwater Hollow?

Does anyone know why did they move down to Garfield?

Thinking –

William Henry – lived in the Big House
Daniel & Emeline (Wm parents) owned 112 acres
Tuttle (Daniels father) lived in Williamsburg, NY
Daniel (Tuttles Father) lived in Nassau or the Alps
James (Daniels father) died in Hillsdale, Ny
Caleb (James father) lived in Dutchess Cty., NY

So do I assume Daniel (Tuttles father) was first to live in Atwater Hollow since the Alps is just down the road?

Or do I assume Daniel and Emeline who seemed to own a lot of land lived in Atwater Hollow?

Anybody have any ideas????

Judy
