Stephentown/Garfield NY

Stephentown Alps East Nassau line 1854

” … Stopped into the Rensselaer County Historical Society in Troy this afternoon.  I took pictures of the 1854 Rensselaer County Map and have attached a couple of views for you all.  Hopefully you will be able to see the S.M. for sawmills. One is located at the end of Shepard Rd, another is located at Stonebridge on the Roaring Brook, and another all the way to the north end of Black River.  There may be more, but these are the ones we found. I hope this helps in searching for the other Atwater SM.  I also went to the County Clerks office and found more property held by Atwaters …”

Stephentown in 1854

Stephentown is in Upstate New York on US Route 43 about a half hour east of Albany and near the Massachusetts line.  Within Stephentown is an area called Garfield, which at one time was a thriving community with stores and its own Post Office.

The drop down menus for this section contain links to material that relates to the Atwater settlments that occurred in the Stephentown – Rensselaer County – Columbia County area of upstate New York, generally beginning with the settlement in  Alps – an area of New York State not far from Stephentown.
